This Morning’s Gear Upgrade: Amaran 25c Beats NK RGB-T12 for Food and Portrait Shoots
This morning (story start from last night), I finally picked up the Amaran 25c, and after testing it right away—I can confidently say it’s a clear step up from the NK RGB-T12. I've been looking for a compact, versatile light for mobile foodie photography and quick portraits, and this one checks all the boxes.
Why the Amaran 25c Wins
I’ve used the NK RGB-T12 for a while. It’s slim, budget-friendly, and decent for occasional fill, but let’s be honest—it has limitations. Build quality, output consistency, and color accuracy aren’t quite there, especially under mixed lighting environments like cafés or client offices.
The Amaran 25c, on the other hand, feels like a real tool—not a toy. The build is solid, brightness is much stronger, and color rendition is accurate across the board. The Sidus Link app control is also a huge bonus for setting quick presets and dialing in intensity or effects on the fly. For on-location headshots, boudoir accents, or restaurant food shoots, it gives me the flexibility I need without dragging out heavier lights.
First Impressions
Brighter output: Easily punches through ambient light.
Accurate color: CRI 95+ helps food and skin tones pop.
App control: Quick and intuitive.
USB-C charging: Convenient and fast.
If you're looking to upgrade from an entry-level RGB tube to something more professional for mobile or travel shoots, the Amaran 25c is absolutely worth a look. I’ve only had it for a few hours, and it’s already earned a spot in my everyday bag.
Avoid the NK RGB-T12—I’ve had two units with broken power switches, likely due to a design flaw. Not recommended for reliable use.
