Thinking About Headshots, Portraits, and Website Design
While renewing the design and structure of my new website, I’ve been working on organizing the photography catalog. It sounds simple, but when it comes to people photography—especially headshots, corporate headshots, and corporate portraits—it’s surprisingly tricky.
In my old setup, all these types fell under one umbrella: the corporate section. Makes sense, right? After all, they’re all professional images of people. But when I explored other photography websites, I noticed many have separate sections—one for headshots, another for portraits.
This got me thinking: How do you logically separate them? Where does a corporate headshot end and a portrait begin? Or what about personal portraits that aren’t corporate? And boudoir portraits, which are a whole different style altogether?
The truth is, people photography covers such a broad spectrum. Each type serves a unique purpose, but visually they can overlap a lot. It’s a bit of a challenge to define neat categories that make sense to clients browsing the site.
So, as I finalize the new website, I’m aiming for clarity without overcomplicating things—making sure visitors can find exactly what they need, whether it’s a sharp corporate headshot, a creative portrait, or something more personal and intimate.
It’s a fun challenge, and if you’re a photographer or a client, I’m curious—how do you see these categories? What makes sense to you?
Would you like me to help you polish it further or make it more formal/informal?
