Getting Ready for Your Corporate Headshot — Tips From Ken Tam

Over the years, I’ve photographed professionals from Fortune 500 executives to entrepreneurs just starting out. One thing I’ve learned? A great headshot isn’t just about looking good — it’s about looking like you, at your best, with intention and purpose. Here are some tips I’d like to share to help you feel confident and prepared before your session.

1. Think About What Your Photo Needs to Say

Before your shoot, take a moment to ask yourself: Where will this headshot be used? What do I want it to say about me? A partner in a law firm will want a different tone than someone in tech or creative industries. Don’t worry — I’ll guide the shoot based on your profession, your brand, and your goals. You don’t need to figure it all out on your own.

2. Wear Something That Represents You Professionally

Choose clean, well-fitted clothing in solid colors. Avoid bold patterns or logos — they distract from your face. A blazer, shirt, or simple blouse in navy, black, grey, or jewel tones works well on camera. If you're unsure, bring two options — I’ll help you decide what looks best under the lights.

3. Relax — I’ll Coach You Through It

Most of my clients aren’t used to being in front of the camera, and that’s perfectly fine. I’ll guide you with easy, natural direction — from posture and chin position to expression and eye contact. I’ll also show you previews so you can see what’s working. This is a collaboration, and I want you to feel good during the process.

4. Grooming and Details Matter

For men: shave or trim just before the session, and consider a haircut a few days prior. For women: light makeup works well, but don’t overdo it unless that’s your usual look. Make sure your clothes are pressed, and bring a comb or powder if needed. Small touches go a long way on camera.

5. Trust the Process

Lighting, angles, lenses — I’ve refined every part of my setup to make sure you look your best. I use calibrated lights and camera settings to ensure your skin tone and wardrobe are rendered accurately. Once we get started, you’ll see how everything comes together. You don’t need to worry about the technicals — that’s my job.

6. Final Touches in Post

After the shoot, I’ll carefully retouch your selected images — removing distractions like flyaway hairs or small blemishes — but I keep it natural. You’ll still look like you, just on your best day.
